Dates in this story are not precise. The Saxons are unlikely to have employed an absolute system of dating years, perhaps using something relative such as “five years since the big wind.” The same would have applied to the Britons.
The Romans had numerous systems, such as Anno Urbis Conditae
“from the founding of the city”, but often used a relative year based on the reign of an emperor.
